Plus Size Runway

White jumpsuit, JIBRI, plus size fashion
I'm covering a lot in this post, so just bear with me.  I saw this jumpsuit from the Alexandre Vauthier Collection months ago and immediately thought of JIBRI.  I knew I had to have this look.  This has been a signature jumpsuit of this designer for years now.  I hear a lot of women complain that no one is doing fashion forward items for plus sizes.  Well here is the perfect example of a plus size designer giving you killer runway fashion in your size at a reasonable price and before anyone else did it. Believe me the Alexandre Vauthier carries a hefty price tag of 1K plus.   I hear complaints of higher end plus size designer's pieces being overpriced, but I personally feel lucky to be a plus size girl.  Try walking into Prada and buying a dress for under $800.  I know I wouldn't be able to afford those prices.  I've bought some of the most beautiful clothing that I know I should have costed way more than I paid.  Example, the Kitty from JIBRI and a hand embroidered pencil skirt from Rue 114 would have easily gone for over 1K in any major department store. I wore this the the Curls, Curves, & Cocktails event and heard the panelists talk about supporting those that support you.  I hear so many get complaintS about prices, but no one complains about Louis Vuitton's prices.  They accept it and either covet the item and say they can't afford it or save up to buy one.  No says that the item is not worth it, but when it comes to plus size clothing the same courtesy isn't given.  Note that we need designers with creative abilities to drive the industry forward. What would happen a JIBRI or a MonifC went out of business?  At this point those are our Gucci, Prada, and Louis.  Just food for thought.
So I'm in San Jose/San Francisco area looking for housing.  In case you missed this point, I will be moving to the area in less than 2 weeks.  (Just know I'm livin' la vida loca right now and not in a good way.)  I figured out when I got to the airport that I forgot my camera.  So you already know these pics are gonna be gorilla style.  Through the grueling process of looking for place to live, because who knew it was a competition to find a place to live, I got to attend the Curls, Curves, and Cocktails event thrown by The Curvy Fashionista and Natural Selection.  The event was panel discussion of the industry's experts on hair, makeup, and plus fashion.  Panelists included Yuliya Racquel from Igigi, Chenese Lewis, and owner of LAMIK makeup line (...and youngest African American woman to have her line carried in a major department store, I might add).  It was a nice break from the home searching process.   I got to have dinner with the panelists, most of whom I've met before and let me just say meeting so many fun people that will be living in the same area takes some of the edge out of moving across the country.

Running out to California was a last minute decision.  I just got back from Miami and was over traveling, packing, and the whole bit.  Rachel Pally gifted me some fabulous maxi dresses that have been my savior this trip.  Easy to pack, the fabric doesn't wrinkle, comfortable, and above all else, stylish.  I'm about life!  These dresses are resort wear at it's best.  I wish I would have had these in Miami.

  1. Talk about it! I don't think the prices are bad for plus size designer wear. That is on par with what I pay my seamstress when I want something made especially for me. And that is not considering the price of good fabric and material. You look beautiful as always!!

    1. How would you say the sizes run? I'm thinking about purchasing a pally really soon and i am trying to figure out what size to get; are they forgiving? I can't seem to decide on getting a 1x or 2x? The size chart isn't really helping me out either.

I usually wear and 18-20 in jeans and and 14/16 on on top

  4. Hi I agree that you pay for what you get and that plus size designers should be supported and I would love to support them. You look great in everything you wear and I want everything I see on your blog but I just cannot afford it. I understand this might not be a budgetnista blog but could you just do a couple of posts similar to the walmart one wear you showed affordable clothes for plus size. As a college student who pays all her bills and tuition ASOS is even a stretch for me. I have a good fashion sense I just can't find the items I need in a price range I could afford. I would even do layaway if you knew good places. Please do posts for a college girl like me struggling right now! Even some great basics( button downs , blazers, jeans, trousers, etc) so that I can wear my statement pieces to make it pop. Thank you

P.S you always look amazing how do you get your stomach to look flat like that..every time I wear certain clothes I feel like it just sticks out like a sore thumb...do you wear spanx or anything? I notice you wear belts a lot is that to create a silhouette? Please more tips on general wearing of clothes to create that hourglass look...and maybe a gd bra place?

    Thanks----sorry this is so long

    1. Hi. A great place for you to join is Fattoo. Women resale their plus size clothing there and most of the time the prices are pretty cheap. Whenever there is something fab, affordable, and looks good on me I def try to post about it, ie. the target line and Pennychic. Sometimes certain items don't work on my body type so I don't post, but check my Facebook page www.facebook.com/garnerstyle. I post about items there that I may not wear on the blog that are fab, but just don't work for me.

    1. I'm wearing a lightweight nude high waisted biker short that I got from OneStopPlus. Black will work for dark complexions. This jumpsuit is transparent so you will need something underneath. That worked just fine, I check and double check and you couldn't see through.

  8. I have to admit I was a little cheap-o-holic when it came to buying clothes. That was in my earlier years. But after having kids and things shifting each way and direction I learned to invest in key items and they have paid me back triple fold. Now dont get me wrong I live for a clearance rack but I make sure that what I am buying on clearance is of good quality first. I plan on making my first purchase with Jibri soon I am in love with her spring collection and I am kinda overlwhelmed with everything because it is all so fly...

So may question is what would you suggest as being a key piece or good investment as my first purchase with Jibri?

    1. I love a good clearance rack myself believe me. If I were you I would get a high waist flare skirt. It's diverse in that you can dress it up or down. I think they run about $110 so not too expensive and they last forever. I bought my first one over 5 years ago and still wear it today. Note you want to get it dry cleaned when needed.

  9. I thibk that the prixes for plus size clothing is fair I mean you get what you pay for right? However im a working girl, and the prices are just not what i can afford right now, so thats where the frustration comes in, beacause i love to look good but the lower priced stuff dont last as long, and you end up spending about the same because u have to replace the cheap stuff often. I love your blog its so open nd real! Thanks

    1. I am a keep it real kind of girl. Please note I support the plus size higher end brands, but I also take advantage of the sale. On Black Friday JIBRI had her 50% off sale and I bought 1000 worth of clothes for $500. It was my husbands Christmas gift to me, but I still saved. :)

  10. Thank you so much for addressing the issue of price. You're right: no one complains about Louis Vuitton, they just acknowledge it and move on. And I like your comparison about "our" designers with theirs: I'd also add Anna Scholz to that list. There's a tidal wave of "not paying full price" out there: I just want a little balance, you know? Someone once said, when you buy something expensive and of quality, the worst you're going to feel about it is the day you buy it. But when you buy something cheap and of poor and/or lesser quality, the best you're going to feel about it is the day you buy it.

    1. Yes! Anna Scholz should definitely be included. I love that saying...I'm gonna have to use that. I love a good sale like any girl, but all of know that 10 years ago we didn't have these fab designers to push the industry forward and we struggled to be stylish. Now style is not so hard to come by and it's because of them.
