I'm so elated that Walgreens asked me to partner with them in support of National HIV Testing day on June 27th. I believe in taking care of yourself and your body. I remember very vividly being in my 20s in Atlanta standing in long lines on this day to get an HIV test and feeling proud that so many of my peers around me were taking charge of their health by finding out their status. Of the 1.8 million people living with HIV/AIDS in the U.S., it's estimated that 1/8 of them don't know they are living with the disease. The only way to know your HIV status is to get tested. Besides going to the doctor or clinics, you can even do it in the privacy of your own home with at-home testing or even at your nearest pharmacy. Walgreens is doing their part in helping you find out your status by offering FREE testing on the following days:
Thursday, June 23rd from 3 pm - 7 pm
Friday, June 24th from 3 pm - 7 pm
Saturday, June 25th from 10 am - 2 pm
HIV testing is a scary thing, but early diagnosis and treatment are known to improve health, extend life and help prevent the spread of HIV. If you test regularly and after every time you put yourself at risk, you can stay on top of your health. It is always better to know.
HIV/AIDS is a scary topic, but thinking back to living in the 90s and being a kid and seeing this disease wipe people out to now to seeing people living life with treatment is an amazing thing and is a testament to progress and our understanding of the disease. One of the easiest ways to help combat the spread of the HIV/AIDS is just by being tested and knowing your status.
