The Plus Size Wedding Dress Hunt - Garnerstyle

The Plus Size Wedding Dress Hunt

Shopping for a bridal gown is one of those experiences that you should be able to do in person.  Many stores can order a gown up to a size 28, but when it comes to carrying the samples in plus sizes they usually fall short.  This can leave a bride very frustrated.  I have to admit that I was irritated with this. When I went dress shopping, I was unable to try on the dress.  I think the sample size they had was a size 8. The bride consultant attached some huge piece of elastic that held the dress up to my body.  In retrospect that experience actually made me sad while mixing a little bit of humiliation in there.  It was probably one of the few times in my adult life that I was made to feel left out, in terms of the experience.  My dress was beautiful and I think I made the perfect choice, but because I am a stylist and I have the gift of visualization it came out wonderful.  But I would have still deserved to have dozens of gowns to try on.

As spring is approaching, questions are coming in about bridal gowns.  I am even working with a bride on helping her to find the perfect dress.  This post I wanted to share some of the things I did and what I learned from wedding dress shopping.  I also want to highlight some bridal shops that cater to plus size women.  Yes, they exist.

Tips for shopping plus size bridal
Figure out up front how important the dress is to you.  To some brides the dress is not important.  If it's not, find a site online, order cheaply, and have it altered.  Slap your hands together and move on to your other plans.  If it is super important, like mine was to me, then you will need a plan of action if you plan on buying you dress somewhere else besides David's Bridal.  If you want the whole bridal experience (trying on the dress, family friends, etc), you may need to travel to find the perfect dress.  Do you research to see if there are any plus size bridal boutiques close to you.  I am providing some, but I'm sure there are some that I will miss.  Get your Google on and don't be afraid to go past the 1st page.  Figure out who's got plus size sample sizes.  There is nothing more disappointing than going to try on dresses and they have nothing for you.  Call ahead and make sure there are ample dresses for you to try on.

Don't let your weight loss plans interfere with ordering your dress.   A lot of brides (I didn't LOL) plan to diet for their big day and can put off ordering a dress because of anticipating being smaller.  I can only detect an issue if you are going from a size 28 to a size 0.  Plus sizes tend to take longer to drop sizes as opposed to straight size.  A straight size girl may only need to drop 10 pounds to drop a size, it takes me about 30 pounds.  I've dropped 70 pounds before and only went down 3-4 sizes.  That's would still be fine for alteration.  This leads me to my next tip.

It is always better to order too big than too small.  Don't order for an anticipated size.  Order the size that you are today.  If you can get smaller going smaller is an easier and less expensive alteration.  Taking the dress out can cost more and could still end up in an ill-fitting dress.  I've actually seen someone make this mistake.  They ordered their "wish size,"  ended up gaining weight and on their wedding day... Let's just say I felt so bad for her. Nobody wants to have the memory (and photos) of their dress fitting too small.

You need to order your dress about 10 - 12 months in advance.  This allows time for the be made and shipped.  Take into account that you may have an international designer ,as I did. I ordered 9 months before my big day and my dress had it's final alteration 2 weeks before my wedding.  That was cutting it close.

Don't settle.  I can't think of one day in a women's life where she deserves to get what she wants.  This will probably be the most expensive dress you will ever buy.  Don't just take something, because you don't think you'll find anything else.

Breathe.  This is easy to say after the fact, but I was so worried about not finding the "perfect" dress.  It's true what they say, you will know when it is the dress.

Bring your shapewear.  You want to be able to see how you would look on the big day.  Bring you strapless bra, long line bra, and girdle.  Have them on and ready to go, so you get the full effect.

Arm people be prepared.  Some of you ladies will not be wanting to show your arms on your wedding day.  That's fine, but the selection of plus size bridal gowns with sleeves is slim.  There are some, but there will be only be a few to choose from.   You may do better online than in the store.  You could opt for an add-on jacket or have sleeves built onto the dress.  Yes they can do that, but it will cost you.

  4. My dress was not a big deal to me..at first. I knew I wanted non-white, floor length and not expensive. I saw a dress on EBay that I really liked. I bid on it and lost. I continued to look but then the same dress came back up for auction and I swear I looked at it 100 times. I finally bid on it and won. I tried to keep my exceptions low as I had heard all the horror stories on purchasing dresses online from overseas. I kept telling myself I only spent xx on it. If it's awful that's okay I'll get something else. When it arrived and I tried it on.. I cried tears of joy and I continued to each time I tried it on. The alterations were minor. In the end of it all it was my favorite "thing" that day. I even threatened my husband I might were it every day I love it so much.

  5. My dress was perfect. It was a sleeveless dress that came with a sheer floor-length jacket that made it almost look like the dress that Kate Middleton wore on her wedding day and I wore it 2 years prior. It was great because for the ceremony I left the jacket on but I got hot at the reception and was able to take it off for a completely different look.

I didn't get my dress at this store because I didn't know it existed when I was shopping for wedding dresses but in Rochester, IN there is a plus-size bridal boutique called Miss Pamela's Bridal Salon.

  7. I got my dress impression bridal in Houston, TX and i was able to try on my dress before I ordered it which was important to me. I went to Davids bridal but I didn't like the selection DVD i felt like every plus size bride went to the store to find there dress and as a plus size bride i didn't want anyone to look at me and say i saw that dress on another plus sized bride. Now im trying to sell the dress, do you know of any places i can sell my dress? (i loved my dress!)

  10. I know David's gets a not-so-great reputation and certainly isn't boutique or couture, but at least they do carry plus-sized samples so that a girl can get and idea of what's going to make her look the way she wants to look. If you go in with that as your only expectation, it can be a good thing (it's what worked for me, at least).

I second the Alfred Angelo suggestion, too. Another chain, another non-boutique shop, but their plus-size options are really amazing and we had a fabulous experience at our appointment.

I ended up finding my dress at a Brides Against Breast Cancer event and it fit perfectly--doesn't even need hemming!--and after buying it I looked at the tag to find it was a David's dress that I tried on in-store (in a different color and with a hideous sash) and hated! Go figure.

Oh, and the arms thing. I knew I would want mine covered so for my appointments I brought along a quickly-knitted "stunt shrug" so I could see how each design/neckline would work when sleeves were added. It helped a lot!

    1. I concur with the David's Bridal suggestion. But I think some think of it in terms of Lane Bryant -- You don't only want to get the one option you want to have choices.

      Delete
    2. I agree and thats what i meant. Im not speaking bad about Davids bridal, but i wanted choices and i didnt want to just settle there because im "fluffy!" Impression bridal had plenty of samples and you can order your dress up to a size 30

As soon as I got engaged my excitement turned into crippling anxiety about trying to find a dress. I didn't want to have to find a dress and never try it on before ordering it. I'm so glad boutiques like Bombshell Bridal are around for curvy brides. It's such a feeling a relief to know that they're not going to judge you based on your size and finding the perfect dress for each girl is what they love to do.

Even my fiance was like... you get excited to go out with your friends and you go dress shopping... be excited to find a dress to marry me in. That is what I needed to hear... I went to about 5 shops in Houston, TX the very BEST SHOP was BELLA DEUR BRIDAL! that place was awesome, had a great experience, the staff was pleasant and had plenty of gowns for me to try on. They took time to explain sleeve options. I found a dress I wasn't looking for, the staff picked it out. I found the one that makes me feel glamorous! Im ready now :)

  45. Why does it seem that all the wedding gowns are geared toward those slimmer women? Don't they think that Big girls want to look pretty on their wedding day? Even the pictures that are online where they show what is supposed to be a plus sized dress but it's on a lady who's maybe a size 4 or 6! I don't want to see how the gown is going to look on some skinny girl. I wanna see how it looks on a plus-sized gal! It just makes the whole process so discouraging. :(

For example, on this site https://www.sofiadate.com/european-brides/ where you can get tips about european brides.
