Know Your Brands

plus size clothing

If you've been here with me the past month or so, I've been doing more posts helpful tips on  building your wardrobe and becoming a successful online shopper.  Today's post is not any different.  When shopping online, you need to know what you are dealing with in terms of fabric, length, and fit. Knowing the brand will help you make a successful purchase with no returns and your expectations either met or exceeded.  I have a listed a few brands above that I am familiar with and have shopped enough to know what to expect from that brand.  This is a something that you are going to want to pin or bookmark for future reference.

Note:  These are based on my personal experiences with these brands.  I can't speak for anyone else and their experiences.  This is meant to give you, the shopper, generalities of the brand in question.

Would you like to see a brand reviewed that you've been curious about?  Comment the brand below and if I'm familiar with the brand I will try to include in the next "Know Your Brands" post.  There are tons of brands out there and I plan on reviewing as many as I can.  Check out the other posts if you haven't as well, Shopping Straight Size & Plus Size Fabric Guide.  Finally, need a measuring tape to accurately measure yourself for online shopping?  I did Garnerstyle measuring tapes just for you.  Get them here.

  2. I was hoping to learn more about ModCloth.I only ordered once from them and the dress was small. Now they offer up to 4X and I would love to order from them again.

    1. Honestly Modcloth is still too much of a wildcard for me to generalize them just yet. I often order big just because I can never tell with the sizing. I've got a couple of dresses, but each have fit totally different. I know they are working on getting their sizing under control, so when that happens I'll def review them.

    2. I think part of the problem w/ Modcloth sizing is that they sell a lot of different brands, so each brand tends to have its own sizing issues. I've only ordered from them twice. The first dress was made by "Retrolicious" (okay FINE it's the one with the cats) and seems a little smallish; the second, I don't remember the brand, but it was truer to size but a little big in the shoulders (which never happens to me, because I have shoulders like a linebacker). I'd love it if they were a little more standardized.

  3. JCPenny is probably one of my favorite stores to shop in locally, but you are right the material for most things is just okay. I would love to see more stores that cater to the plus size in my community.

  4. I ordered my first piece from ASOS and I cannot be more satisfied with my purchase!!!! The shirt I purchased fit perfectly and the material/fabric is way better than I expected. I was thinking it would be on par with Forever 21 or H&M. I can't wait to order more stuff!

    1. I wear a lot of Igigi and I love it a lot. It definitely runs larger than most, size down at least one size. When I first started to wear Igigi, I was wearing a 5x (34W) from Catherine's Plus store and the 30/32 size fit perfectly. A lot of their dresses are made for women who do have a defined waist in my opinion. Empire waistlines can be problematic for the long-waisted women or low bust line. The dresses I have a beautifully lined and are of excellent quality and easy to launder. You won't be disappointed if you order from Igigi, just order one size smaller in most things except pants.

  11. This list is great.
JC Penney does me dirty every time. That Worthington line does not like my hips one single bit. ASOS, SimplyBe and Dorothy Perkins are great though!

  14. I've had different experiences with eShakti...to me, most of their stuff runs a little smaller (other than the knit shirts). However, I'm built differently than you...I'm more of a "rectangle" with broad shoulders, not much waist definition, and a butt but no hips. I agree, the custom sizing is definitely better for dresses, although I've had decent luck with the knits "off the rack." Also, you didn't mention SWAK or Domino Dollhouse -- SWAK runs mostly a little bigger, especially those fluttery camis/tops, but their more fitted styles run small, and those eternity dresses run really small -- the ties on top are nowhere near long enough to follow the videos if you're bigger on top than their model. Domino Dollhouse, at least their self-branded items, run true to their size chart, if not a little big. Their babydoll dresses are amazing.

Also Kiyonna & Igigi - in my experience, Kiyonna's size chart is pretty accurate, and their sizing is very consistent. Their skirts, to me, run big -- I think I'm a 3.5, lol. The mesh/lace stuff runs a little smaller (but part of that is my own comfort level). Igigi is sadly ALL OVER THE PLACE and they are not terribly return-friendly...I mean, sure, they'll take it back, but you have to pay return shipping (not even discounted bulk-rate return shipping, $15 from UPS return shipping), and it takes them a month to refund your money. Plus, I've had some issues with them not shipping things right away. Their clothes are beautiful and well-made, but to me, their customer service is lacking.

Finally, Old Navy. Generally runs big. I wear a size smaller in their pants than I do from LB, for the most part...but their skirts run smaller, and their tops are hit or miss (knits run bigger, woven run smaller). Dresses are usually true to size. Their jeans are the reason I continue to buy from them. Also, their customer service is actually pretty decent, and if you hate something, you can return it with no hassle.

Thanks for publishing this -- I was curious about some of the brands, but I am always hesitant to order online from things I've never tried in person!

  15. You should try Chicos. I know there is a stigma attached to it as being an "old lady store" but they have the best plus size jeans ever and they run fabulous sales. They have nice jewelry as well.
